Religious art has always fascinated me, whether it’s in churches or galleries I find myself entranced by them. I think it’s because of the serenity of the facial expressions. The masters of the past were great at conveying that. It’s a feeling I seek out as well; that kind of calm.
I wanted to take a different approach when I started this painting. I hadn’t seen religious icons depicted in cubism the way I was imagining it, so I did a rough sketch first. With my oil pastels, I wanted bold colours and in pen, a bright gold halo. The face was the final part because that’s what was going to be most different; showing various perspectives in the same picture. The result is a painting that gives me the calm I was looking for.
