Specialist Hilda Clayton was 22 years old when a mortar shell blew up during a training exercise in 2013, killing her along with four Afghan National Army soldiers. The moment of her death was captured on camera by an Afghan whom Spc Clayton was training in photojournalism. He too died.

The US Army released the photo and it was widely published by the media. Though the Afghans killed during the explosion are neither named nor mentioned, I was struck by the photograph and felt compelled to recreate it an attempt to represent the chaos we’ve been living in since 9/11.
